OAU Shuts Down

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in Osun State, yesterday shut down the institution indefinitely, following three days of violent protests by the students.

The students are protesting an increase in the acceptance fee for fresh students and health insurance fees. It started on Monday, with the students boycotting lectures.

The university authorities ordered them to vacate the campus yesterday before noon. The institution’s spokesman, Abiodun Olanrewaju, said the closure became inevitable to forestall a breakdown of law and order, adding that all attempts to negotiate with the students failed.

Olanrewaju alleged that the protesters abducted seven security officers and manhandled them before they were released yesterday.

The students’ spokesperson, Bidemi Adeoti, alleged that the management ordered the security men to molest them, stressing that the students would continue to protest the increase.{googleAds}
